Who is Steve Harrison?

He became a copywriter only at 30, moving from a researcher’s job into the creative department of Ogilvy & Mather Direct in London. He later became European creative director of OgilvyOne and global creative director of Wunderman. In between, he founded his own agency, HTW, which created campaigns for IBM, Xerox, Microsoft, Vodafone and Rolls-Royce.
From 2002 to 2007, he won more Cannes Lions in his discipline than any other creative director in the world. In 2006, he became the first creative director to chair the Direct jury at Cannes. Campaign called him the greatest direct marketing creative of his generation, and D&AD included him in The D&AD Copy Book of the world’s best copywriters.
He wrote How To Do Better Creative Work, How To Write Better Copy and a biography of the advertising pioneer Howard Gossage, Changing The World Is The Only Fit Work For A Grown Man. He addresses the evening’s topic in Can’t Sell Won’t Sell (2020), on why advertising stopped selling and started saving the world, and in Adland’s Progressive Gaze (2026).
